What happened to McGuckin?
1117/17 update - another poor quality experience, with checkout, in a major rush, asking if i need a bag before they see what I've purchased... then putting items that obviously don't need bagging in bags until I corrected them, and, this person was training someone new! The quality has seriously deteriorated, time to shop at Home Depot... ses ya!, I'm done with McGuckin...
I have always had helpful service when I can find someone to stop and answer my questions, but it seems they offer services the staff may not be fully trained for. I went to have some grommets set and they came out warped, cracked, and not fully set. The guy said he could 'maybe' hammer them down more, but I know that would not help with the warping. Then instead of telling me he couldn't do it, he said he could remove the cracked grommet and came back with a full grommet sized hole (so basically cut it out) which means my entire project is now useless. I like to shop local but I don't want to go back when someone just shrugged at a 25 hour project wasted and didn't ask if there was anything he could do for me until I'm crying on my way out.
The best hardware store in the Boulder/Denver area by a mile. I'm not sure how people can go to Home Depot with this store in town. McGuckin's has the best customer service and does a great job taking care of their employees and retaining them for years. The product selection is also unmatched. Another perk is the multiple entrances making it easy to get to. Thank you for making this such a wonderful and friendly store!
Too bad that it's practically an Ace now...I loved it so much back in the day. Lovely memories strolling through with my dad while he bought what he needed. Will never be the same. They still have a lot of what they used to but I can feel the change. Just glad they're still around, they've been a huge help!
Very disappointing.
I'v been shopping at McGuckin for nearly 20 years, and always had great experiences finding what I needed and getting help. However, my last two visits have been quite disappointing. I came in to repair a water spigot and the plumbing representative barely even looked before telling me they didn't have what I needed - I soon found out that the part I needed was the most common in all of plumbing. Wow. Then tonight, I went in for some basic items and was completely baffled at how incompetent and helpless the staff was. First we needed some supplies for a terrarium, and no one could confirm that the product was accessible. Then when we went to check out, the cashier forgot to enter my rewards #, so he had to return all the items, then charge them again. When we went to gather one of the items outside, it was secured by an iron gate, which we had to disassemble to get out products.
I purchased a wood oven from McGuckin. They had it in stock, which was amazing because it is a very unusual item. The McGuckin Team assembled it perfectly at no charge, and the cost of the item was less than Amazon. McGuckin is the definition of a great store. Love it.
Edit: Perhaps the change I'm sensing is just a change of time - 2007 McG vs. 2017 is different for sure even if unrelated to the new co-op. Either way, still a great place and great people !
