Pretty good. No pretense.

* The worship music is distinctive, probably unlike anything you've heard at other churches. They'll take a lot of older hymns and redo them in a more modern style. (which can be difficult if you actually know the older hymns) Unfortunately the music was also occasionally way too loud. I left with my ears ringing one Sunday and after that decided I'd either have to sit in the very back of the auditorium or wear ear plugs.

Still I didn't have many options so I thought I'd give it a try. Here's what you can expect:

* I found it really hard to connect there. If you're outgoing or already know people you'll probably do fine, but if you're not it can feel like a pretty insular place. There's a fairly lengthy process to attend a missional community (a small group), go to a class, get assigned based on where you live, ... After 8 weeks of trying I finally got a "Welcome to the Well" email basically telling me to start the whole process over again. And that's when I threw in the towel and decided to try other churches.

The Well is an interesting church: one of the few in Boulder attempting to be doctrinally sound in a community that's anything but. My initial impression of the church was that it was remarkably un-diverse. If you're a 20-something, hipster, graduate student you'll fit right in - I saw maybe one or two couples over 40.

* Sermons are very similar to churches like The Village Church in Dallas. Maybe 50% teaching / 50% anecdote or personal story. Not being in the target demographic a lot of the anecdotes were lost on me, but I found the teaching to be pretty decent overall. I mean this is Boulder - any church that's teaching out of the Bible is a step in the right direction.

This is a welcoming community of believers that unashamedly preaches the Gospel, but is a safe place for non-Christians who want to know more about Christianity.

So incredibly disappointed with leadership.

If you're looking for a church that preaches the gospel, great, welcome to The Well. The demographic may seem young, but it is only a reflection of the city in which we live. I started attending The Well when it was scrawny young kid who wore braces and still rode a bike with training wheels. I loved it then and still do. This is a community of people longing to see Boulder transformed into a city that loves Jesus. From the worship to the sermon, I leave every Sunday hearing the gospel. You can't ask for more than that. Preach the gospel & make disciples. It's The Well's mission, and all, including you, are welcome to join.
